Specializing in drug-free IBD treatment

IBD includes Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and microscopic colitis. Symptoms of IBD include abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, malabsorption, weight loss, and symptoms outside the GI tract like rashes and joint swelling. IBD is believed to result from immune system dysfunction, with genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors playing a role. Dr. Ivanina specializes in drug-free IBD treatment.

Crohn’s disease

Crohn’s disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease that can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the anus, though it commonly impacts the small intestine and beginning of the colon. It causes patchy areas of inflammation, leading to symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, malabsorption (especially vitamin B12!), and weight loss. Complications may include intestinal blockages, ulcers, and malnutrition due to poor absorption of nutrients.

Ulcerative colitis

Ulcerative colitis is another form of IBD, but it specifically affects the inner lining of the large intestine (colon). Unlike Crohn’s, it results in continuous areas of inflammation starting in the rectum and ascending to include other parts of the colon.

Symptoms often include diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and an urgent need to defecate. Over time, the chronic inflammation in ulcerative colitis increases the risk of colon cancer.

Microscopic colitis

Microscopic colitis is a less well-known type of IBD that affects the large intestine. There are drug-free solutions, in which Dr. Ivanina specializes. Unlike Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis, it does not show visible inflammation during colonoscopy but is diagnosed microscopically through biopsies. It is divided into collagenous and lymphocytic colitis, each with unique cellular changes in the intestinal lining. Symptoms typically include chronic, watery diarrhea, and treatment is integrative using diet, supplements, and anti-inflammatory medications if needed.

Symptoms:

  • Persistent abdominal pain and cramping
  • Chronic diarrhea, sometimes with blood or mucus
  • Urgent need to defecate
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Fatigue and general malaise
  • Fever and night sweats
  • Reduced appetite and malnutrition
  • Joint pain or swelling
  • Skin rashes or sores
  • Eye inflammation or irritation
  • Delayed growth in children and adolescents

Possible causes:

  • Genetic predisposition and family history
  • Abnormal immune system response to gut bacteria
  • Environmental triggers like pollution pesticides or chemicals
  • Diets high in processed foods and low in fiber
  • Chronic anemia from ongoing blood loss
  • Imbalances in the gut microbiome (dysbiosis)
  • Smoking, particularly in Crohn’s disease
  • History of gastrointestinal infections- even COVID
  • High levels of chronic stress and lifestyle factors
  • Use of certain medications, like NSAIDs

Possible consequences:

  • Severe malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies
  • Increased risk of colon cancer
  • Development of intestinal strictures and blockages
  • Formation of fistulas (abnormal connections between organs)
  • Osteoporosis due to poor nutrient absorption
  • Liver disease, including primary sclerosing cholangitis
  • High risk of infections from a weakened immune system
  • Delayed growth and development in children and adolescents
